Dear Viktor,
Against all odds, I still draw breath.
What they say is true, the Zone is a harsh mistress. There are some here who believe that the Lord Himself turns his gaze away from this place. But I think I know better than that. I've heard rumors that somewhere closer to the CNPP, there is someone known as the Professor. I figure if there's one academic, there may be more than one-- and that there is a chance my father might be nearby. Thusly, I have set my heart on the very same path to reach this Professor.
While the Zone, being a place without laws, is no stranger to exactly the sort of people you don't want to cross paths with, it is not all bad. There are good people here. I have joined an organization called Grizzly, which has dedicated itself to maintaining some semblance of peace and order by combatting bandits and thieves. I think that I might be able to do some good with them during my time here.
I've also found myself substituting for a local Doctor, who disappeared without much fanfare last month. These days I find myself wishing I spent a little bit longer at med school before devoting my life to the church. I'm sure your sister would love to gloat over finally being proven right.
I hope these letters are getting to you, and look forward to hearing back soon. I'd be a liar if I said I didn't miss my old life, but doubly so if I said I was content to return to it.
Forever your friend, near or far,
-Semyon Belikov
